In this particular novel the technique works fabulously, however, and this is a huge credit to Mathews narrative skills, to his nuanced telling that's as good as, or much better than, most authors' showing, even better as the narrative voice is very, very wise in terms of understanding its characters and their sense of self, even as they fail to get each other--see above themes
