The increased opposition to smoking is the real culprit behind the candy's decline in popularity The main reason for candy cigarettes becoming much less popular and much harder to find is the transformation of smoking from a harmless social habit to something that's seen as incredibly harmful to both the smoker and those around them
A similar situation exists in the salt industry, with foodstuffs produced by government-controlled companies regularly found to have salt contents three to four times above the government's own guidelines
(It's even stricter than Canada's restricted rating, which allows kids under 18 to attend the flick with an adult.) Researchers from the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies, who authored the report, cite a survey of 5,000 teenagers that found, for example, that 15-year-olds were 73 per cent more likely to try smoking if they had seen more movies with actors puffing away, as opposed to peers who had watched fewer portrayals
